Default Garageband woes - 06-25-2009, 05:25 AM

Hi guys first post here, and I must say incredible work. I started doing research here a couple weeks ago and now I have a mini of my own. I purchased a mini 9, upgraded to 2gb of RAM. Today I installed OSX to a 32gb Runcore via another Mac and updated to 10.5.7. I am using DellEFI 1.2a5. I also installed iWork and Garageband 09. I have installed the touchpad drivers as well as toyed with the different apps found on this forum to scale resolution in order to have access and see the rest of a window due to the mini's limited resolution (works great in system prefs ).

My issue is that I still am not finding a way to 'see' enough of the screen in Garageband - specifically access all the controls found at the bottom of the window (play/record/etc). Has anyone found a way around this? Or at least a way to scroll to the bottom of the window or resize it? I have seen a little bit of discussion of this, but nothing concrete. Thanks a bunch and thank you for the wealth of info on this site.

I have tried that and it does not do anything. I tested in Pages by resizing a window and using the '+' button to go back and forth between sizes, but I am not able in anyway to get to the lower right corner of the garageband window to resize.

In the FAQs:

Virtually increase your Dell Mini Screen Resolution

It's a bit ugly, but when you find a program that just wont fit in less than 600 pixels this will let sort it out. Best of all it's easy and reversible.

I tried downloading the program in the thread that scales to 80%, but that still is not enough to get to the lower corner of the screen to resize. Command and option clicking the green + does not work either...

So it seems that it is not possible to drag garageband's window any smaller vertically using the lower right hand corner (I tried this on my macbook). So it seems the only option is by scaling the resolution by quite a bit. I will post this is the FAQ forum, and perhaps someone knows or can come up with the exact amount to be scaled and or an app to run.

I'm guessing its wanting a 1024x768 screen. Height on mini9 is 600, on 10v is 576. A bit of math: 78% for mini9 and 75% for mini10v

Mini1: Vostro A90, Black, 2G, 1.3 Webcam, Bluetooth, 64G SuperTalent, OS X 10.5.8
Mini2: Mini9, Black, 2G, 0.3 Webcam, Bluetooth, 32G RunCore, OS X/Win 7, internal PCI-e SHDC Reader
Mini3: Mini10v. Black, 2G, Webcam, 500G HD, OS X 10.5.8 [Hibernate w/NBI 0.8.3 RC4]

Well, I tried multiple scaling factors, and it seems that merely scaling won't do the trick for garageband 09 - the window seemingly cannot be resized; just the icons/toolbar/finder bar/etc within the window. The size of the window is locked or something...

Default Any solution yet? - 12-28-2009, 03:40 AM

Has anyone actually found a solution to resize the Garageband window for a Netbook so you can access all the controls?? Is this possible?

I am having the same problem with my Wind U100 Netbook.

I just installed ilife 09 on my dell mini 10v as well, and was a bit disappointed with the screen resizing issue and thought that garage band would be un-useable on the mini. That was until I remembered that you can use some of the keys on your keyboard to control recording and playback. The other buttons like adding tracks and what edit windows to view are acessable from the menu bar. So use your space bar to play and stop playback as well as to stop recording. Press the letter "R" to start recording. Press the letter "Z" to skip back to the beginning. Use the left and right arrows to fast forward and rewind. Although its not the perfect solution it does make garage band useable on the mini. Also I ended up connecting a external monitor, keyboard and mouse to my mini during my recording session and found the keyboard shortcuts I mentioned the easiest to use even with a full screen and mouse available. Its faster to press the keyboard keys than to move the mouse and press the on screen controls.
