The Dell Mini 9 was the first netbook of the "Inspiron Mini" series released by Dell in September 2008. At the time it rivaled the Asus EEEPC and Asipre One.
Notably, it was the first Dell Laptop to make use of Intel's Atom processor, a low-power chip designed especially for sub-notebooks or "netbooks". It is also the first Dell product to offer a Solid State Drive as the only storage option, this is often considered as a deal breaker by many consumers.
The Mini 9 is available pre-loaded with a special distrubution of Ubuntu or Windows XP Home edition, though both OS X and Windows Vista have also been succesfully installed. Read more on operating systems in our OS forum.

The USA market has a choice of 3 models to choose from, a low-end Ubuntu version that starts at $349, a high-end Windows XP version and an in between version, also with Windows XP. All systems are upgradable using Dell's interactive cart. All configurations however have Ubuntu install options andthe ability to upgrade the specifications to the maximum possible.

Dell have released 2 version of the Inspiron 9 to the European market. These are of both similiar high-spec with one each of Ubuntu and Windows. Both units are only available in black. Dell have promised more colours and configurations for its European customers in the coming weeks.
